A special one-time offer

That's right, one time. You see, back when I first started selling prints, shortly after Gutenberg invented the printing press, my Dad's sister basically decided she needed to turn her home into the Levy Gallery, L.A. I've never been, but my parents have and she has somewhere around a dozen prints hanging in her home. Though none of my recent work. Hmmm, maybe I should make a phone call....

Anyway, I decided back then that it was wrong to charge family full price, it just didn't seem right. I've kept to that policy for immediate family, and last week my aunt in Florida ordered a canvas of the photo you see above.

There's just one problem. The canvas just didn't work in her home. It's 24x36, which while not gigantic, is a fairly large print. It's stretched on a wooden frame and ready to hang, but without the right size space and distance to view it from, can look a bit awkward. (Kinda of like sitting an arm's length from a 50" flat screen TV.)

So now my aunt is in the market for a smaller and perhaps different print for her office. And you, my readers, are the big winner. The Mikesandy - Holiday Prints

There was a time, back in "the day" (not really sure what that means, but it sounds wicked cool to say), when my roommate from sophomore and junior year of college, The Mikesandy, and I would go hiking every fall in Northern New York.

The plan, back in the day, was to climb all of the 46 peaks >4,000 feet, a few at a time, every year. Well, then Mike decided to move to Utah to go to grad school (errr, ski) and I went to umpire school and was never around in Sept. and early Oct. (you don't want to be up there at night after early Octoberrrr. Trust me).

The first year we went it was so cold the last night there that we slept in our cars, and had to crank the heat every 45 minutes so we wouldn't freeze (it was something like 25 degrees outside, in September). I remember the next morning we went to get some breakfast and complained about the cold to the proprietor who thought we'd actually slept outside on one of the mountains (we must have looked really much worse for the wear).

Anyway, what's my point? Well Mike's been in Utah hanging with the Mormon's for a few years now and he's been shooting like crazy. A few weeks ago we were talking and decided to offer a collaborative holiday season print special.

So here's the deal. From today until New Year's all the images in Mike's favorite's gallery are available in 16x20 matte prints at only $100 plus shipping. I'll be taking the orders and making the prints, and Mike gets all the glory. Well, not quite, but sorta. Of Love & Discounts

I think that at any time in business, but especially with new businesses, there's a temptation to giving into our friends when they ask for discounts/freebies. This is a mistake I have made, and I'm just as guilty as everyone of this, to this point. We love our friends, we want to keep our friends and make them happy. BUT. And here's the kicker - love will not pay for my new 17-55 2.8, or, metaphorically speaking, feed the kids.

Also, I should say right off that no one, not even family, gets freebies from me on photos (unless they're a gift, but that's different), but even family pays my costs. My list of those who will continue to get items at cost is itsy bitsy, and if you don't already know who you are, no, I will not add you to the list.

Why am I blogging about this? Because this is not a conversation I wish to have with every friend who thinks, "I love your work," means, "Your prints should cost me the same as they would on Snapfish." Because, well, I don't print with snapfish, I print with a high-quality professional print-house and especially in the print market I've found, you get what you pay for. Now, I do offer discounts from time to time, and those are available to everyone, but discounts do not equal free/at cost.
