Speedlinks: The return

I know, I know, it's been wayyyy too long since I blogged, well, anything. I think part of that is because things I'd normally blog about (Speedlinks etc.), I've just been Twittering about. 

That said, I haven't shot a ton lately, but hope to get back to being busy soon. Without further adieu, I give you the latest version of Speedlinks:

• A new entry level camera from Nikon, the D5000 starts us off today.
• Followed, by a very, very, high end tripod head, the Arca Swiss Cube.
• Found the link to the Cube, via the Luminous Landscape, which is also where I discovered large format landscape photographer Joseph Holmes.
• Also, check out Jason Moore's way cool photographer profiles.
• I don't remember where I found this, but there's a ton of info (and some way cool photos), over at Abduzeedo.
• And finally, from the ASMP - a video covering the basics of image licensing and copyright.

A Few Odds'n Ends

I know, it's been a while since I posted any speedlinks, but I thought I'd keep it brief today with some quick hits:

• Following up on the great success of our first workshop, Fed and I have set a date for a Get It Off! Shootshop. I took a few days to blog it, as we wanted to offer it to repeat offenders first, but here's the site. As I write this, there are only two spots left!
• Very intersesting discussion via John Harrington's blog and the Globe re:an iconic image of the new president.
• This has probably been a long time coming, but I just signed up for Twitter.
• One of my favorite photographers just bought a D3X.

That's it for now, I gotta bail, my house is about to be thermal fogged (skunks, begone!)

Jack's Got a Camera - Look out.

Velvet just sent me this link to a PopPhoto story about the cast and crew of 24 and some of their photography. It looks like Jack and I have more in common than our ability to capture terrorists and MacGyver our way out of tricky situations. Wait, what? I don't capture, nevermind.

Speedlinks

It's been a while since I blogged some links, but I came across a few cool things this week I wanted to share:

• First, make sure you check back early next week for a recap of Saturday's Strobist Event in Maine. Rachel, the Fed, Tony, Shyla and I have rented a badass van for the day and I'll be blogging some photos from the event Monday or Tuesday.
• I know it's kind of old (spring '07), but still relevant - American Photo weighs in on the New Portrait. Chase Jarvis weighed in with his view here in the Pop Photo blog.
  
• Can the new 14.7 megapixel Canon G10 really compete with a medium format camera? For small prints Michael Reichmann thinks so.
• Want some fall color? Check out college roommate The Mikesandy's photos from fall in Utah. (FWIW, Mike's using a Canon G7 I think, (that's the much older version of the new G10 - it's not the camera).

Sources of Inspiration

See, I told you I'd be blogging more now that I'm home.

First of all, I want to thank everyone for making yesterday's post the most read in the short history of this blog. Second of all, I thought I'd take a few minutes to share some sources of inspiration that I've stumbled across on the Web these last few months. Unlike my usual "links" posts, some of which will send you shopping/lusting, these are all photographer's whose pages I have bookmarked as go-to sources for ideas and inspiration.

1. Check out Gregory Heisler (I found him because the Strobist is a huge fan) - I especially like this window lit photo of Bruuuuuce.
2. Joel Grimes - he's got some way cool behind the scenes videos on his blog, and some sweet 3-light tutorials too.
3. There's always my Flickr favorites.
4. Blair Bunting and Tim Tadder - way cool portraits of athletes.

Odds & Ends.

I know, it's been a while since I've blogged. I've been busy! I thought I'd just check in real quick.

Anyway, a few quick links first.

• I did sign up for this - a small business tax seminar (free!) put on by the Massachusetts Dept. of Revenue. Probably a bit dry, but, you know, necessary.
  
• I also picked up this new toy. I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but I'm very excited. I sold my Tokina 12-24 (it just wasn't sharp enough for me, and the new lens is a full stop faster (that means it lets in twice as much light at it's widest aperture).
• I did update my Flickr favorites this week though, so click there for some inspiration.

I wish I had more, but that's it for now. Tomorrow's the last game of the season, then I'm working the first round of the playoffs before wrapping it up for the year.

Oh, and lastly, I wish all my clients (and perspective clients) would read this - and photographers this.

Odds and Ends

Just a quick post, I'll be shooting a new lighthouse (stay tuned) tomorrow, so I'll have some actual photos to post tomorrow, but for nwo:

• I'm selling a lens to finance the purchase of a far more expensive lens.
• iTunes has "Magic Tour Highlights" songs for download. Included are some of Danny Federici's last work with Bruce and a cool acoustic "Ghost of Tom Joad" with Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello. I saw this tour in Hartford in February and my dad saw it last week in Foxboro - truly a phenomenal experience.
  
• Lastly, check out this link - it's kinda like Make-A-Wish for grownups who aren't dying. OK, that's a weak and probably insulting definition, but you all get it. Anyway, check it out, it's the brainchild of high school buddy and world traveler David Soffer.

Friday Speedlinks

Lots to blog about today, as I've finally begun saving the cool links I stumble across each week on the Web, and a cool project/trip as well, but more on that a bit later.

• Let's start here with the behind-the-scenes Golf Digest video of a cover shoot with Annika Sorenstam.
  
• Next I'll send you here to a PopPhoto story about a photographer who shoots superheroes (I can't wait for the new Batman).
• Did you ever want to have your photos made into greeting cards that you could sell? Check out this site. It's not free, but it looks like it has potential.
• NAPP's Dave Cross has just posted this video review of the Ray Flash - a ring flash adapter for your hot shoe flash. It's not cheap, but in the ring flash world, it isn't expensive either.
  

And lastly, because I couldn't help myself, I got in the way-back machine for this McDonald's ad. You know you love it.

Friday Speedlinks

I just thought I'd post some links while I work on my photos from yesterday's trip to Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

• Click here for a link to a Luminous-Landscape tutorial about HIROLAM sharpening (High-radius, low amount). I first learned this technique from Dan Margulis's book "Photoshop LAB Color" and it's a great trick for enhancing local contrast in your images.

D300 is back! And some hot links

I got my D300 back from repair today, and as my alarm is set for a 4:45 wakeup to shoot, I really should be in bed, but I wanted to blog a few things first:

You have to just read the captions. Too funny.

How come Nikon doesn't make one of these?

On a more serious note, does anyone have any experience with these or these? I know Scott Kelby has said good things about the Canon one, but I'd be interested in hearing more opinions as well.

My dad and I watched American Gangster last night - if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. We watched the nearly 3-hour extended version, but it was very well done. It was almost like Goodfellas meets Serpico. Lastly, I've got a fun shoot planned with Shyla for tomorrow, so check back Thursday for some photos.

Thanks to the Fed, who just posted about this cool blogger widget called, "Intense Debate." Basically, it's comments for your blog on crack, turning any comment thread into a forum/backa nd forth chat. Comment here and you'll see what I mean.

• The New York Times has a great piece today on why more options aren't always a good thing.

• Kevin Kelley writes about marginal costs and the "value" of things that are "free." The crux here is that when things are free, "you have to sell things that cannot be copied."
• An older post from Chase Jarvis about, how if you have confidence you really shouldn't worry so much. Just focus please.
