A Weather Feature
Well, it snowed so much at today that we got out of school early (1:05 or so) and it then took me a half hour to travel the 1.5 miles (not a misprint, 1.5 miles=30 miles) to my house. One of my editors had asked for some weather featurey type shots, so off I went. I wasn't keen on getting my gear all wet, but I figured "D200 + snow = weatherproofing test?" sure, why not.
The above shot was taken after I saw this mother and her eight-year-old daughter waiting for a bus and had to go back for the shot. I drove by them, kicked myself, and said, "Go back for it," so I did. I hopped out of my car in time to catch the plow in the photo (the one I sent my editor was the next in this series, and didn't have the annoying white van in it.) Basically, I hopped out of the car, had the camera in high speed mode, waited for the plow, fired off 3 shots, crossed the street, got some names, and ran back to my car. Whew.
The camera (and my 17-55) were pretty wet by that point, but I had a towel in the car, and after I dried them off, they appeared to be good as new. Also worth noting - conditions like today's make me glad I put protective filters over my lenses, that way no snow, sleet or road salt sprayed from the plow could have gotten on my actual lens. I also used my lens shade, even though there wasn't going to be any flare, figuring the extra protection couldn't hurt (it didn't).
Anyway, that's all for now, more high school hoops tomorrow night.
